Checking lifting equipment periodically and being able to prove it is not a Spanish quirk: it is European. What changes is the name of the rule and the interval.
Directive 2009/104/EC sets the minimum safety requirements for the use of work equipment and obliges all twenty-seven member states to transpose it. That is why every country has its own rule and its own interval: what Spain calls RD 1215/1997, France calls the arrêté of 1 March 2004 and Germany calls BetrSichV. The underlying duty is the same everywhere.
Some countries fix the interval in the rule itself; others only require the check to be periodic, leaving the interval to the conditions of use and the manufacturer's instructions. This table is a starting point, not legal advice: always confirm your specific case with your safety adviser.
